我国咨询业和改革开放同时起步，从1980年开始，由中国企业联合会（当时为中国企业管理协会）开创了这项工作。由中国企业管理协会牵头，通过学习与引进国外咨询研究的理论与方法，结合中国的国情及企业的实际情况，开展企业咨询研究。根据中为咨询观察目前我国咨询业发展时间非常短，和西方咨询研究业的发展水平有大的差距。总是不能形成专业化合作化的集团作战行为。西方咨询业已发展到以客户为轴心提供个性化扎实的服务，而国内咨询业的人才结构、知识结构还不能承担国际化复杂的业务，零散资源亟待整合。现今越来越多的国际咨询研究公司来到中国开展业务，抢滩中国市场。

经过几十年的发展，咨询研究业已经成为一个发展迅速的知识型产业部门，被列为高层次知识产权中的重要领域。据不完全统计，目前在中国的海外咨询公司足有上百百家。目前，中国咨询市场上活跃着两支队伍。一支是本土咨询机构，另一支是世界著名的国际咨询机构。两支队伍各有优劣，国内本土咨询机构缺少完善的咨询知识和技术管理体系，缺少有实践经验的咨询人员；而国际咨询机构明显的特点是不懂中国市场国情。在目前的中国市场上，外资咨询公司占有垄断地位，要发展本土咨询业，有必要先了解国外咨询公司的发展特点和方向，以便我们迎头赶上。以下是笔者整理部分有价值的信息供参考：

由于专业分化越来越细，新兴行业不断涌现，咨询公司也在不断拓宽服务范围，为不同的企业量身定做咨询方案。70年代下半期，美国的咨询研究公司就能提供115种咨询业务。包括生产咨询研究、人事咨询、市场营销咨询、会计咨询、行政咨询研究等11大类。而随着近年来经济全球化发展趋势和信息技术、通信技术、计算机技术的蓬勃发展，咨询研究的范围进一步发展，方法进一步改变。
