第四章标题是“第四周:我要成为怎样的人,就能成为怎样的人”,英文标题是“Reversing the Process – From Cause to Effect”。
生命就是表达,和谐而富建设性地表达自己,是我们的分内之事。悲伤、痛、不幸、疾病和穷困,并非必不可少,我们应该坚持不懈地消除它们。
Life is expressive and it is our business to express ourselves harmoniously and constructively. Sorrow, misery, unhappiness, disease, and poverty are not
necessities and we are constantly eliminating them.
身体和心智都是“自我”的工具而已。
The “I” of you is not the physical body. That is simply an instrument which the
“I” uses to carry out its purposes. The “I” cannot be the Mind, for the mind is
simply another instrument which the “I” uses with which to think, reason, and
plan.
自我的成功需要一些合理的流程去做:
1、 不要养成失败的习惯
凡事如果不打算去做,就不要开始;如果开始了,无论如何也要把它做成。务必不能为失败找
借口和妥协。
2、 给自己一个成功的远景。
3、 强化告诉自己“I can be what I will to be”。
4、 精神的休养。
忌讳过度劳动、过度玩耍或者过度的身体活动,因为不管何种性质,都会产生精神倦怠,使其停滞不前,这样就无法再进行一些更重要的实现意识力量的工作了。所以我们应当经常寻求适时的“寂静”。力量是通过休息得以恢复的;在“寂静中我们才可得以安宁,当我们安宁下来,我们才能思考,而思考,正是一切成就的奥秘。
Over-work or over-play or over-bodily activity of any kind produces conditions of mental apathy and stagnation which makes it impossible to do the more
important work which results in a realization of conscious power. We should,
therefore, seek the Silence frequently. Power comes through repose. It is in the
Silence that we can be still, and when we are still, we can think, and thought is
the secret of all attainment.
禅修和静思冥想都是精神休养的方式,在《庄子•内篇•齐物论第二》里有这样的片段:
南郭子綦隐机而坐,仰天而嘘,苔焉似丧其耦。颜成子游立侍乎前,曰:"何居乎?形固可使如槁木,而心固可使如死灰乎?今之隐机者,非昔之隐机者也?"子綦曰:"偃,不亦善乎,而问之也!今者吾丧我,汝知之乎?汝闻人籁而未闻地籁,汝闻地籁而不闻天籁夫!"
南郭子綦“吾丧我”,大致就是一种精神的放松和休身养息。
